A study by Concordia University researchers has found that wearable fans targeting the face and neck can provide thermal comfort similar to traditional desk fans while using less energy. The research, presented at the 12th International Conference on Indoor Air Quality, Ventilation & Energy Conservation in Buildings, compared wearable personal cooling devices with bladed and bladeless desk fans in a controlled office environment set to 25°C (77°F).
Using a 23-segment anatomical manikin, the team measured skin temperature, heat loss, and overall thermal comfort. The face and neck fans delivered comfort levels comparable to a low-speed bladed fan and a bladeless desk fan. The face fan, in particular, increased facial heat loss by up to seven watts, bringing thermal comfort back to a neutral range.
The study suggests that wearable fans could help reduce air-conditioning energy use in offices, especially in hybrid work environments where only a few people occupy large spaces. By providing targeted cooling, these devices allow for more efficient use of centralized HVAC systems without disrupting coworkers with unwanted drafts.
