SLM Co-Inventor Dieter Schwarze Retires After 40+ Year Career

Dr. Dieter Schwarze, instrumental in the development of Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology, has concluded a distinguished career spanning over 40 years in metal additive manufacturing. As Chief Engineer at Nikon SLM Solutions, Schwarze was a driving force behind the evolution of the company's metal 3D printing systems.

Nikon SLM Solutions announced Schwarze's retirement, highlighting his significant contributions to transforming SLM from an emerging concept into a viable manufacturing process. Throughout his tenure, he was involved in every generation of Nikon SLM technology and holds more than 100 inventions and patents. CEO Sam O'Leary acknowledged Schwarze's profound impact, stating that the additive manufacturing industry would be fundamentally different without his work.

During a farewell ceremony, staff honored Schwarze, presenting him with a commemorative 3D-printed trophy. O'Leary emphasized Schwarze's foundational role as a co-inventor of the SLM process approximately 30 years ago, commending not only his initial ingenuity but also his sustained passion and dedication in advancing the technology to its current state. O'Leary described Schwarze as a "solid rock" and a consistent source of drive for the company.

Schwarze's extensive contributions to the field have been recognized with multiple accolades, including the SME Industry Achievement Award, underscoring his lasting legacy in the advancement of metal additive manufacturing.
