From Perseverance's location on the Jezero Crater rim, Earth appeared as a single, pixel-sized dot due to its vast distance of approximately 195 million miles (314 million kilometers). Phobos, meanwhile, is a lumpy, potato-shaped object about 17 miles (27 kilometers) wide, orbiting Mars at a relatively close distance of 4,850 miles (7,800 kilometers).

This phenomenon, where one celestial body appears to block another from view, is known as an occultation. While Phobos crosses the Martian sky multiple times daily and Earth is visible for extended periods, aligning them for an occultation requires careful planning and fortunate timing. The observation was planned and the composite image assembled by Mark Lemmon, a co-investigator for Mastcam-Z.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California manages the Perseverance rover's operations as part of the Mars Exploration Program. The Mastcam-Z instrument itself is led by Arizona State University in collaboration with Malin Space Science Systems.
