Beehive Industries Acquires Machine Shops to Scale Engine Production
Propulsion manufacturer Beehive Industries has acquired two Cincinnati machine shops, Able Tool Corporation and Planet Products Corporation, to support the full-rate production of its Frenzy engine.
Beehive Industries, a US-based propulsion manufacturer, has announced the acquisition of Able Tool Corporation and its subsidiary Planet Products Corporation. These two precision machine shops are located in the Greater Cincinnati area. This acquisition comes as Beehive's Frenzy engine transitions into full-rate production, following extensive testing and a significant U.S. Air Force contract.
The move complements Beehive's earlier purchase of 30 EOS metal 3D printers, a transaction that more than doubled its metal additive manufacturing capacity. While the new printers will boost the output of 3D printed components, the acquired machine shops provide essential precision machining and finishing capabilities. These facilities bring over 120 years of combined aerospace experience, aiming to create a manufacturing system capable of producing more than 8,000 engines annually.
Darius Ehteshami, Chief Operations and Finance Officer at Beehive Industries, stated that the acquisition is a strategic move for scale, driven by customer demand for immediate engine delivery. The combined capabilities aim to provide immediate precision machining and operational experience to scale production rapidly for defense applications.
Beehive's operational structure will now feature two specialized hubs: a Production Machining Center of Excellence in Cincinnati, Ohio, and a Production Additive Manufacturing Center of Excellence in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Cincinnati facility will focus on high-volume machining, while Knoxville will concentrate on additive production and post-processing across various metal printing technologies. This setup is designed for speed, precision, and repeatability.
The acquisition of Able Tool, founded in 1984, and Planet Products, with roots dating back to 1947, integrates decades of precision machining experience into Beehive's operations. This acquisition highlights a critical trend in advanced manufacturing: vertical integration.
