38 Teams Advance to 2026 University Rover Challenge Finals

After a rigorous System Acceptance Review, 38 teams from 11 countries have advanced to the 2026 University Rover Challenge Finals, scheduled for May 27-30, 2026, at the Mars Society’s Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) in Utah. The competition, organized by the Mars Society, saw a record 116 teams from 18 countries compete for a spot in the finals. Each team submitted detailed reports and video demonstrations of their rovers, which were evaluated by a panel of judges.

The Mars Society’s director, Kevin Sloan, praised the teams for their dedication and effort throughout the selection process. The 38 finalists will now spend the next two and a half months refining their rovers and conducting advanced testing to prepare for the challenging field competition. The event will take place in one of the most Mars-like environments on Earth, offering a realistic simulation of conditions astronauts might face on the Red Planet.

The Mars Society also announced several other events related to the 2026 convention. Renowned astro-biochemist Dr. Steven Benner will deliver a plenary talk at the International Mars Society Convention in October, discussing his book, *Meet the Neighbors*, which reexamines NASA’s Viking missions. Additionally, Crew 19 will conduct a multi-week mission at the Flashline Mars Arctic Research Station in Canada, furthering research in Mars analog environments.

Dr. Kevin Pollpeter, a leading expert on China’s space program, will also speak at the convention. His insights into space strategy and global competition are expected to draw significant attention from attendees. The Mars Society continues to promote research, education, and exploration of Mars through these events and initiatives.
