Mars Terraforming Not Possible with Current Tech

A recent NASA-sponsored study has concluded that terraforming Mars to make it habitable using current technology is not possible. The research, published in Nature Astronomy, highlights that the amount of carbon dioxide available on Mars is insufficient to significantly warm the planet and create a stable environment for human exploration.

The Martian atmosphere is primarily composed of carbon dioxide, but it is far too thin and cold to support liquid water, a crucial element for life. The atmospheric pressure on Mars is less than one percent of Earth's, making it impossible for liquid water to remain on the surface. Proponents of terraforming have suggested releasing greenhouse gases to thicken the atmosphere and raise temperatures, but the study found that even the most accessible sources of carbon dioxide are not enough to achieve this goal.

Lead author Bruce Jakosky of the University of Colorado, Boulder, emphasized that while carbon dioxide and water vapor are the primary greenhouse gases that could be used, there is not enough of either to provide meaningful warming. The research team used data from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Mars Odyssey, and MAVEN spacecraft to analyze the distribution and availability of these gases on Mars.

The study also examined other potential sources of carbon dioxide, such as ice caps, soil, and mineral deposits. However, even if all these sources were utilized, they would only contribute a fraction of the pressure needed to raise temperatures sufficiently for liquid water to exist. The researchers noted that even if all accessible carbon dioxide were released, the resulting atmospheric pressure would still be far below what is required to support a stable environment on Mars.
